FILM STUDIES W4
20.08.19,
So today in our film studies class sir showed us few opening shots from films and we analyses how some word might have been in the director’s or cinematographer’s head that lead to taking a shot in such a way. How single word could describe precisely what the shot or scene should contain, we did a little of reverse engineering to find out what exactly must have been written in the script or at least at the back of the directors mind while establishing the scene in that specific way.
Post discussion we tried to remake the film or redo the previous assignment that we were assigned, this time my partner was Ronak and I had a very simple action which was walking towards a cabin, in the last exercise I write to put in a story through a medium of action, I kind of complicated it. Though the experiment that I did by choosing a simple action made it too bland and I personally didn’t enjoy neither did I like it. When there something comical happening in a scene, it excites me and I try to get more of my attention towards the frames, the angles and the technicalities, although if the idea of something isn’t exciting me I fail the job, which isn’t great thing either.
I think I still trying to adjust myself with the people around me, their temperaments, their way of thinking, wave lengths etc although I don’t want to completely change the way I’m heading into my style and likings but I’m trying to figure a mid way which is comfortable and suitable for my companions and me.
In the next half of the lecture we discussed about characters and how they are introduced in a film, we saw few films which introduced the characters so well, for example in the film “Duel” the car characters fit so properly to the character sketch, even by looking at the cars we could distinguish between the hero and the villain. We were then assigned an assignment where we were supposed to describe a character and then try to establish an opening scene by just introducing the main lead.
